When a Klarna customer has passed away
Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming, and we want to make this process as smooth as possible. Please note that the information provided here is general guidance and not legal advice. What will I need?
We will ask you to provide the following documents to ensure we can support you smoothly:
Your valid identification (passport or ID card): Photo or scan of your document with all four corners of the document visible
Death certificate of the deceased person (in some cases interim or coroner’s certificates, or certified translations, may be accepted)
Power of Attorney: If a solicitor or representative is acting on behalf of an heir
If you have access to the following documents, please share them with us as well:
Grant of Probate, Letters of Administration, or equivalent legal documentation authorising you to act on behalf of the estate
An official inheritance certificate or a testament together with an opening protocol and certificate of completeness
Please note that if the deceased customer held a Klarna Balance, Fixed Term, or Savings Account, we will request that you complete a payout form with your bank details and personal information to enable the transfer of the assets to authorized heirs. Certified copies of all heirs will be requested before processing the payout.
Klarna will inform you of any missing information during the process.
What happens next?
Once we receive the necessary information, Klarna will:
Suspend customer profile to prevent unauthorized money movements
Cancel all marketing and communications to the deceased person
Cancel Klarna Card
Provide overview of outstanding balances or claims
Transfer any remaining balance to the rightful heir(s) or authorised solicitor after debt settlement.
We aim to contact you within 3 days of receiving all documents. Depending on the complexity of the case, ongoing court proceedings, and any outstanding loans, the process of withdrawing any remaining balance and fully closing the deceased’s account may take anywhere from a few days to up to a year. We are committed to keeping you updated during the process whenever further action is required from us.
